Santa drops in at children's party
'It was a great surprise'COLLETTE DEVLIN
Santa arrived early and in style to the Invercargill Fire Brigade children's Christmas party at Turnbull Thomson Park yesterday.
Invercargill senior firefighter Daniel Middlemiss, whose Red Watch shift helped organise the event, said it was a chance for the firefighters to give back to their children.
There had been "minimal manning" to cover shifts in recent months, which meant many of the firefighters had worked most weekends and some would also be working on Christmas Day.
This resulted in some firefighters not seeing much of their children.
HeliSouth had loaned a helicopter free so Santa could fly in, he said.
"We managed to keep it a secret from the children and it was a great surprise," he said.
The annual event was organised for fulltime and volunteer firefighters and St John ambulance children.
