A 19-year-old Alexandra man is in critical condition in Dunedin Hospital after he suffered severe head injuries in a single motorbike crash on the outskirts of Alexandra last night.

Central Otago sub area commander senior sergeant Ian Kerrisk, of Alexandra, said the man was found by his friends in an area known as the Pines beside his bike after he was heard leaving his friends house on Pines Rd about 8.25pm.

''His bike was heard for a short time and suddenly stopped,'' Mr Kerrisk said.

His friends went to investigate and after finding the man injured by his bike they raised the alarm.

The man was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital where he remains in intensive care.

''Early indications are it appears he crashed into a tree,'' Mr Kerrisk said.
