Southland children looking to fill the gap between Christmas and school can add another event to their diaries - the Southland District Council Holiday Programme.

The programme is co-ordinated by Venture Southland.

Venture Southland event co-ordinator Laura Russell said the programme would offer a range of activities to rural children.

"What we try and offer is a more diverse holiday programme, so it's not all arts and crafts or it's not all sports."

This year, the event will feature outdoor games, painting and clay stations, and, one of the big drawcards, the green machines.

"They're three-wheeled bikes that are built to skid, basically. The kids love them."

The programme was timed to arrive after the excitement of Christmas had died down, she said.

"The kids are really looking for something to do, so it means they can get out of the house and meet with their friends.

"I think the parents enjoy the break."

The holiday programme will visit Te Anau, Otautau, Winton, Riverton, Wyndham, Lumsden, Garston, Waikaia, Tokanui and Stewart Island between January 7 and 24, and costs $6 per child.

Registration forms are available from Southland District Council area offices or the Invercargill i-SITE.
