Arrowtown independent cinema Dorothy Brown's has installed a state-of-the-art digital projector system.

The cinema started screening arthouse and mainstream films more than a decade ago.

The introduction of a digital system, including 3-D capability, means that Dorothy Brown management no longer need to wait for old-fashioned celluloid prints.

Cinema manager Samantha Relph said one element that was not changing was the intimacy of the venue.

She said she was delighted by the response from patrons who had seen films projected digitally, including the latest Bond movie Skyfall.

"Skyfall has played to full houses and, from comments I have received, our new technology has really captured the imagination of moviegoers."
