The Alexandra fire brigade has stopped an ammonia leak at the Hinton Estate Vineyard depot in Alexandra.

Brigade spokesman Russell Anderson said the leak happened after contractors were trying to upgrade the depot's cool store ammonia safety valves.

A refrigeration contractor told other contractors the system was isolated but gas began to leak when a pipe was cut.

Emergency services were called and a 30m cordon was set up by police.

Firefighters donned protective gear to enter the site and were able to isolate the leak in about 45 minutes.

Central Otago sub area commander Senior Sergeant Ian Kerrisk, of Alexandra, said the depot and six houses were evacuated and people working at businesses nearby were told to stay indoors.
