Invercargill residents were left a little starstruck this afternoon when they spotted actor Sam Neill eating lunch in the city centre today.

The Queenstown-based actor was dining at Esk St's Bonsai Restaurant with family, who were visiting from Central Otago.

Neill said he was expecting a grandchild and the group had travelled down to use Invercargill's medical services, because there were none available in Central Otago.

''You can't have a baby in Central," he said.

"The whanau is expanding exponentially.''
