Riverton Coastguard retrieves life boat

A large and empty life boat, understood to have come off a bulk shipping carrier from Greece, was found floating in Foveaux Strait today.

Riverton Coastguard spokesman Noel Anderson said the fibreglass life boat was about 10m long.

A Bluff fishermen saw it floating unmanned in Foveaux Strait this morning and contacted authorities, with the Riverton Coastguard dispatched to the scene, about 35km west of Riverton, at 9am.

The coastguard located the life boat and is now towing it bacck to Riverton.

The name on the life boat is Anangel-happiness.

An internet search reveals the Anangel-happiness is an 89,000 tonne Greek Bulk carrie whose last position was the Indian Ocean.

It is unknown if the lifeboat fell off the shipping carrier and when.
