A man has been crushed this afternoon by a bulldozer near Dipton, a fire communications spokesman says.

The man sustained head, chest and arm injuries and emergency services have been called to Bryce Rd, the spokesman said.

St John South Island region communications and promotions coordinator Alena Lynch said a 35-year-old male received serious injuries after he was crushed by a bulldozer.

Two ambulances are at the scene and a helicopter from Te Anau was enroute, she said.

''It is more than likely the injured person will be transported to Southland Hospital by helicopter,'' she said.
