A man was killed and several people were seriously injured after a van crashed into a power pole near Mossburn last night.

Police Senior Sergeant Dave Raynes, of Invercargill, said only one vehicle was involved in the fatal crash near the intersection of Wreys Bush-Mossburn Rd, about 4 kilometres from Mossburn, about 6.50pm.

Eight people had been travelling in the van, one of whom had died at the scene, he said.

Two people had serious injuries, and four others had moderate injuries, such as broken bones, and one had minor to moderate injuries, he said.

Police from Invercargill, Winton and Te Anau had attended the scene with members of the Fire Service.

Four ambulances and two helicopters and had responded.

Two people with serious injuries were flown to Southland Hospital by helicopter. The rest were taken by ambulance.

Victim Support was at Southland Hospital last night with family members of the passengers of the van, he said.

A St John spokesman confirmed there was one fatality and that two people had serious injuries. Three also had moderate to minor injuries.

Wreys Bush-Mossburn Rd was closed for several hours last night.
