Track closure worries board
The closure of a side track on the Great Walks Milford Track may be deterring some visitors from going to Milford, Southland Conservation Board members say.
In October, a rock fall forced the Department of Conservation to close the Sutherland Falls side track.
Board chairwoman Viv Shaw said she had heard reports of people cancelling trips to Milford Sound because of the closure of the side track to Sutherland Falls.
Board member Peter Rids dale said Sutherland Falls were a key feature of the Milford Track.
"The closure of the side track may have a bigger effect than many people realise," Mr Ridsdale said.
The department confirmed at the Southland Conservation Board meeting yesterday the side track leading to the popular waterfall would be closed for the summer.
Department of Conservation Te Anau visitor assets programme manager Annie Wallace said there had been no decline in visitors to the Milford Track.
