Meridian Energy resumed talks with Rio Tinto last week to negotiate the electricity contract at the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter.
Meridian chief executive Mark Binns today confirmed the talks had started.''We met with the owners last week and we are continuing to communicate with them this week,'' he said.
He said the nature of the talks were confidential and an update would be provided when there was something to tell, he said.
New Zealand Aluminium Smelters general manager Ryan Cavanagh, of Invercargill, said discussions with Meridian were continuing but he could not provide any further information
