Talks between Rio Tinto and Meridian Energy have resumed to negotiate the electricity contract at the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter.
Meridian chief executive Mark Binns confirmed yesterday that the talks had started.
"We met with the owners last week and we are continuing to communicate with them this week."
The talks were confidential and an update would be provided when there was something to tell, he said.
New Zealand Aluminium Smelters general manager Ryan Cavanagh said discussions with Meridian were continuing but he could not give any further information.
