Heart and soul has taken out the top prize in this year's Light Up Christmas Spectacular.

Professionals MacPherson Real Estate general manager and contest judge John Irving said the best new entry award was won by 30 Brook St, Riverton, because of the level of enthusiasm invested in the decoration.

"The lady was just living the event - it wasn't just a gimmick for her.

"She put her heart and soul into it."

Four spot prizes were awarded to 65 Rimu St, 122 Kildare Dr, and 7 Burns St, Invercargill, and 880 Niagara-Tokanui Highway, Tokanui.

Prizes included restaurant vouchers, meat packs, Christmas Shop vouchers and other-family-orientated prizes, Mr Irving said.

Twenty-one houses across Southland entered the event, and he believed they were all worth a visit.

"We thought all the candidates were really, really good.

"One of the people involved even decorated their car and their boat, so they really got into it," he said.
