Police have released the name of the canoeist found dead at Brod Bay, near Te Anau, yesterday.

He was Luca Ruffato, a 22-year-old restaurant worker from Italy.

Mr Ruffato went missing on Friday, while canoeing in Lake Te Anau.

His body was found close to his canoe at Brod Bay.

He had been last seen taking a red, fibreglass canoe out onto the lake about 10am.

Police earlier said they believed he had a lifejacket.

Mr Ruffato had been working at a restaurant in Te Anau.
