Gore pubs close early
TERRI RUSSELL IN GORE
Three Gore pubs closed early last night to avoid alcohol-fuelled disorder after large crowds flooded the venues from the Gore Races.
Senior Sergeant Richard McPhail, of Gore, said police talked with pub management about shutting their doors early to avoid arrests, intoxication on the premises and a subsequent risk to liquor licenses.
There were a large number of people who had consumed a lot of alcohol at the races and while there were only a couple of isolated incidents at the pubs it was about prevention first, he said.
Traffers shut up at 9:30pm while Howl at the Moon and the Thomas Green both closed their doors at 10pm, Mr McPhail said.
''It was probably a good decision by management.
''They can close at any time,'' he said.
The key message for the holiday season is that people should drink sensibly, look after their mates and avoid confrontation, he said.
