Invercargill police and the fire department are investigating a fire at a vacant property in Bowmont St.

Senior Sergeant Dave Raynes said emergency services were called to the unoccupied house after 1.40am early Christmas morning.

A shed at the back of the house  was set on fire, he said.

The shed was well alight when emergency crews arrived at the scene, Mr Raynes said.

A fire communications spokesman said two appliances from the Invercargill fire station were called to the fire and spent nearly two hours putting out the fire.

The fire was being treated as suspicious and a fire investigator was en route, he said.
