Swimmers who fancy a cool dip in Arrowtown will not be using the community pool after the pump failed.

The Herftord St pool run by Lakes Leisure on behalf of the Queenstown Lakes District Council closed on Sunday and remains shut indefinitely.

Lakes Leisure chief executive Ruth Stokes said the pump failed and would probably need to be replaced.

The pump was 10 years old and its expected lifespan was up to 20 years but conditions in Arrowtown in winter were harsh.

''Unfortunatley, at this time of year, trying to find anybody to fit it or replace it is quite a challenge.

''Hopefully, we can get it sorted between Christmas and New Year.''

Anyone who bought a membership will be contacted by Lakes Leisure to discuss options.

Normally, the pool opens daily from December to the last weekend in February.
