Wood chopping competitors from across the lower South Island have sharpened their axes to take part in the 2nd Cromwell Town and Country Club wood chopping competition in Cromwell today.

A total of 21 competitors from Southland, Otago, the West Coast and Canterbury are competing in the event as well as one axeman from Wales.

New Zealand under-21 wood chopping representative Brad Pako, of Cromwell, said it was always a pleasure to be able to compete in front of a home crowd.

However, he was feeling "a bit of pressure" to perform after having a month break from the sport.
