Young sporting enthusiasts were keen to test out their swimming, biking and running skills today as the Gore Multisport Complex hosted its first triathlon.

There were about 20 participants aged six and up, and organisers were happy with the turnout.

Sport Southland Eastern Southland office manager Susie Burrows said it was good to get the children involved with triathlon at a young age.

There was a good number of young competitors and they were really enjoying it, Ms Burrows said.

Fiona Sharp had two sons in the competition and both were awarded placings. It was very well organised and it was a good incentive for children to keep fit over the holidays, Ms Sharp said.

Kids Tri is run by the Gore Multisport Complex and Sport Southland. It follows the successful Tri Group programme introduced at the complex last year. The triathlon is expected to become an annual event.
