Thousands of vintage machinery enthusiasts soaked up the sun in Edendale this weekend during the annual Crank Up event.

Crank up convener Neil Irwin said the good weather had attracted a massive number of people to the event, and it was likely to be a record crowd.

''We had a brilliant day yesterday, probably one of the biggest crowds we've had since Sir Edmund Hillary was here.''

This year's special guest, Olympic rower Nathan Cohen, had been especially popular, particularly with children, he said.

''They're all getting autographs, photos and hanging onto the gold medal.''

A procession of 50 Model T Fords, dating from the early 20th century, had also been well-received.

The Crank Up event continues today at the Edendale Recreation Grounds until 5pm.
