Thousands of people converged on Oreti Beach at the weekend as Southland temperatures reached the mid-20s.
Families and friends lined the beach yesterday, lapping up the warm weather, sunbathing and relaxing as children built sandcastles, paddled in the water and played in sand dunes as temperatures reached 24 degrees.
Tomazina Koppen-Pavlovich, of Invercargill, enjoyed the summer sunshine. The weather was great and it was a good day to relax at the beach, she said.
Shona Hewlett, of Gore, said the weather was fantastic. Her grandchildren enjoyed their last swim in the sea before school begins.
Police impounded a vehicle that had swerved in the surf, splashing people and narrowly missing children, Sergeant Wing-wah Ng said.
