Crews quell trackside scrub fires
BROOKE GARDINER IN QUEENSTOWN
Kingston fire crews were kept busy battling two scrub fires, thought to have been caused by the Kingston Flyer vintage steam train, in sweltering conditions near the town yesterday.
Southern Fire Communications shift manager Karl Patterson said a scrub fire, about one hectare in size, was reported just before midday near rail tracks.
Fire crews managed to get the initial fire under control before a much larger one broke out nearby, he said.
"We had three appliances from Kingston and a helicopter battling the second fire which broke out on Department of Conservation land at 3pm."
The fire was under control yesterday evening and fire crews had been stood down.
