Police are continuing to investigate a fatal crash on State Highway 1 just south of the Taieri River bridge about 1.40pm yesterday.

The victim was Viggo Nielsen, 80, of Woodside, who died at the scene when his four-wheel-drive vehicle crashed with a truck, Senior Sergeant Kelvin Lloyd, of Dunedin, said.

The highway was closed for several hours, Mr Lloyd said.

Southbound traffic is being diverted through Henley, back out on to State Highway 1 and northbound traffic has been diverted along Centre Rd to Allanton.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken, of Dunedin, said yesterday both Dunedin and Mosgiel police responded to the crash.

The driver of the truck was transported to hospital for a check up, Mr Aitken said.
