A man and his dog escaped unscathed from a serious house fire in Mataura today after a fire alarm alerted them to the blaze.

Station officer Mark Witham said a man had been outside mowing the lawn in Albion St this afternoon when the fire alarm went off.

After entering the property through the back door he discovered a fire, which appeared to have started in the laundry, grabbed his dog and left the house, Mr Witham said.

Both the man and his dog were uninjured.

The fire caused significant damage to the roof and back end of the property.
