Work begins next week on the $4.5 million upgrade of a water pipe running between south Invercargill and Bluff.

Invercargill City Council engineering services group manager Russell Keen said the 20km pipe ran between Clifton in south Invercargill and Ocean Beach Rd in Bluff.

The pipe would be upsized from 250mm in diameter to 280mm to allow for any increased demand in future.

The project, to be funded by loans, would take until the end of the year to complete and may cause some disruption to traffic travelling on State Highway 1, Mr Keen said.
