LATEST: Invercargill Police this morning charged a 20-year-old Invercargill man in relation to an alleged sexual assault of an 8-year-old girl at Oreti Beach on Saturday.
The man appeared in the Invercargill District Court today at 3pm before Judge Kevin Phillips.
He was granted interim name suppression and remanded him in custody without plea until February 12.
Invercargill Police would like to thank members of the public for their assistance.
They would also like to hear from any one who may have been at Oreti Beach about 4pm on Saturday.
There was a large number of people present on the beach at the time and Police are keen to hear from anyone who might have seen someone acting suspiciously in the area.
The alleged incident occurred in the sand dunes about 50 metres south of the main entrance to the beach.
