Sole survivor of the Easy Rider tragedy, Dallas Reedy, was today sentenced to community work for drink-driving.

Reedy, 45, appeared in Invercargill District Court before Judge Kevin Phillips charged with driving with a breath alcohol level of 485mcg on January 23.

The court was told it was Reedy's third drink-driving charge.

Reedy's lawyer Richard Smith said his client was still struggling to deal with the Easy Rider tragedy.

He was also struggling being around people and had hoped to not be sentenced to community work.

He could not give any real reason as to why he was driving but accepted he should not have been, Mr Smith said.

Judge Phillips sentenced him to 100 hours' community work and disqualified him from driving for one year and one day.

If Reedy was caught drink-driving on any future occasion he would go to prison, he said.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Denise Harvey said Reedy was driving in Queens Drive on January 23 when he was stopped by police who noticed he was affected by alcohol.

He admitted drinking a couple of beers, she said.

Eight people died when the Easy Rider capsized after it was struck by a rogue wave in Foveaux Strait in March last year.

Sole survivor Reedy was rescued after clinging to a petrol can for 18 hours.
