Official Waitangi Day celebrations in the Queenstown Lakes district will be limited to a day out in the Queenstown Gardens, while Central Otago won't officially mark the occasion.
Residents and visitors to Queenstown can join a community picnic and Waitangi Day celebration organised by the Queenstown Lakes District Council and Wakatipu Whanau Group.
Council arts and events facilitator Jan Maxwell said the picnic would build on the success of last year's event.
"We held this event for the first time last year and the response was brilliant," Mrs Maxwell said.
"We had a great mix of locals and tourists of all ages and nationalities coming together to discover more about Maori culture and history."
The celebration will include live music, story telling, Maori massage, food stalls and flax weaving lessons.
The Waitangi Day Community Picnic runs from 1-5pm at the band rotunda in the Queenstown Gardens today.
Admission is free.
There are no official celebrations planned by the Central Otago District Council.
