More artists are needed to finish a mural in Riverton that looks set to enhance the town's growing reputation as a lively arts centre.

The mural is on the side of the Riverton Veterinary Clinic.

Dunedin-based painter Tony Tarasiewicz used aerial shots of Riverton as an outline for the six circular panels, the first step in a continuing project initiated by the Riverton Community Arts Centre.

The space was donated by building owner Allen Eastwood and a team of Riverton volunteers helped put up the panels earlier this month.

Arts centre gallery co-ordinator Dianne Robinson said the gallery committee was now "dying to get cracking" on filling the rest of the space.

The idea was to bring the lively arts scene that Riverton was becoming known for to a more visible space, she said. The panels included south coast-sourced paua and pebbles and it had a raised texture which invited exploration.

"This has been more than a year in the planning - this is art out for people to appreciate. We're getting it out there and beautifying Riverton at the same time."

Tomorrow committee members will discuss if there will be a call for artists or if the completion of the mural will be by invitation. gwyneth.hyndman@stl.co.nz
