Police say they have ruled out a marine distress incident off the Port Chalmers coast this morning, following reports of a flare.
Senior sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said two calls came in just before 6am - one person reported a white flare, another reported a red flare.
Mr Benn said there had been an investigation this morning and he was confident there was no marine vessel in distress.
It might have been atmospheric conditions, leftover Chinese New Year fireworks, or activity from O Week, he said.
