Hundreds of pupils donned their school colours to compete in the Southern Zone schools athletics at Surrey Park today.

Gorge Road School principal Tim Marriott, who was co-ordinating the event, said about 500 pupils from seven rural schools, including Halfmoon Bay School, were competing in the annual athletics competition.

He had been impressed by the quality of the competition this year, and said many pupils had qualified for the Southland-wide athletics in March.

Rimu School classmates Jazmine Kenny and Tashara Tawera, both 10, said they had enjoyed participating in the sports day, especially the jumping events.

Even with the cloudy weather, athletics day was better than maths because the girls got to be outdoors and having fun, Jazmine said.
