Queenstown police are searching for information on a serious assault in Cow Lane's Tardis bar at 4am last Thursday.

A heavyset male Maori or Pacific Islander is believed to have kicked through a locked toilet door then punched and stomped on a man who tried to intervene when he came across the alleged offender holding a woman in a headlock and rifling through her handbag. The assailant (right, in CCTV footage) was wearing an Adidas T-shirt and New York Yankees baseball cap with an entwined NY symbol embroidered on its front.

"This was serious, unprovoked violence, and this man just walked away as if it was an everyday occurrence," Senior Constable Sean Drader said.
