Police were yesterday still trying to find a man who fled from police by running over the top of a police car and making his way across the Mataura River early on Saturday.
Police had tried to talk to the man, who was walking down River St in Gore, before he made his escape.
Senior Sergeant Richard McPhail said the man ran over the top of a police car and across a reserve before jumping into the river and making his way to the other side.
"The river was so low he probably only got his ankles wet," Mr McPhail said.
Police were unable to identify or capture the man, despite a dog patrol unit from Invercargill helping with the search.
There was no damage to the police car, and Mr McPhail said the man was believed to have been under the influence of alcohol.
