The glamorous and popular but briefly absent Winter Festival ball is back this year.

SkyCity Entertainment Group, the owner of Skycity Queenstown Casino, has signed on as a main sponsor for this year's Winter Festival, the annual party to mark the start of the snow season.

The "Casino Royale" ball will be held on June 22 in the refurbished Queenstown Memorial Centre.

Winter Festival manager Lisa Buckingham said it was great to add such a fantastic evening to the 10-day programme.

"When I first started as festival manager, locals and visitors alike expressed that the ball was sorely missed in 2012's lineup, so we are delighted to see its comeback."

SkyCity Queenstown general manager Michelle Baillie said the ball was iconic and popular.

Entertainment on the night will be announced at a later date and tickets go on sale on April 29 for $149, which includes a three-course meal and drinks courtesy of Gibbston Valley Wines.

The festival kicks off on June 21.
