The Southland Boys' High School rugby league team is holding a garage sale this weekend to raise funds to send the team to Auckland for the New Zealand secondary schools tournament.

The garage sale, which will include items the team has collected, a raffle and a car wash, if the weather allows, will be held from 9am to 3pm on Sunday.

The fundraiser will be held in the hall alongside the farmers' market and will include a one- hour performance by New Zealand rock legend Larry Morris.

Southland Boys' High School teacher Jonathan Bringins said the team was fundraising to get 22 players, aged from 13 to 18, to the rugby league tournament in Auckland in September.

The talented team needed about $20,000, Mr Bringins said.

"For the boys, who feel they have a chance of going further, it's a great opportunity," he said.

The garage sale was the first fundraiser for the team who will host quiz nights and hold sausage sizzles.
