Police are investigating a fire at a block of flats in Invercargill.

Detective Derek Millar, of Invercargill CIB, said police were called to the fire at the flats in Tweed St about 9.20pm on Monday.

The fire was on a back porch and caused severe damage to the porch structure, he said.

Someone passing by the flats had seen the fire, called 111 and alerted neighbours, who tried to put the fire out, Mr Millar said.

"The occupant was sleeping at the time of the fire.

"They were unharmed but upset."

Police were conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire and were seeking help from the public, he said.

Members of the public who may have seen anyone or any vehicles in the area of Tweed St between 8pm and 9.20pm are asked to contact police, Mr Millar said.

Police were also interested in locating a red 4-litre oil container that was missing from the scene.

Anyone with information should call Invercargill police on (03) 211 0400.
