Southland District Mayor and longtime Te Anau resident Frana Cardno is comforted by her son, Paul Cardno, as the family ketch, Manuska, leaves Lake Te Anau on the first stage of its journey to Sydney.
The ketch, which will undergo a refit in Dunedin before crossing the Tasman, has been a a fixture on the lake for more than 20 years.
The yacht was built in a spare section beside the family's Te Anau home in an 11-year labour of love by Mrs Cardno's late husband, Murray.
It was used in the family business, and more recently, to transport Mr Cardno's coffin to his funeral at the yacht club in 2011.
The ketch will be sailed to Sydney and moored at the Sydney Yacht Club by Mrs Cardno's son Stephen.
