Parts of Southland will be given a spruce-up this weekend.

A rubbish drive will be held on Saturday to clean the streets of Bluff, while the beach at Omaui will be cleaned up on Sunday.

The Bluff event is being organised by the Bluff 2024 group, and chairman Steve Mitchell said it was a good opportunity for residents to work together to clean up the town.

People wanting to help should gather at the green reserve opposite the Bluff Service Centre at 1pm, where they could pick up rubbish bags and gloves and nominate their cleanup area.

A free sausage sizzle would be held afterwards to thank the volunteers, Mr Mitchell said.

The Omaui event is an Omaui Landcare Group project and member Steve Morris said it followed a similar, highly successful cleanup earlier in the year.

The event was not only a good opportunity for people to get together, but it would also help keep the area beautiful.

A pot luck-type barbecue would follow the cleanup, and tea and coffee would be available.

The Omaui cleanup will begin at the Omaui reserve beside the beach at 9am.
