Chance to pass on old gear to others
Clear out the garage and the shedCASSANDRA POKONEY
Got a tennis racket lying around not being used? Or how about a rugby ball or two? Or a set of wickets taking up space?
Then Sport Southland wants your help.
The organisation has begun a programme to provide schools and community groups in need with sports equipment.
Sport Southland chief executive Brendon McDermott said the Pass It On programme was about giving back to the community.
A donation day would be held on September 4, with southerners encouraged to clean out their homes of unused sports gear and drop it off at various points in Invercargill, Gore, Winton and Te Anau.
People could also contact Sport Southland to arrange collection.
"So many of us have balls, bats, or even whole sports sets just gathering dust in the garage, when there are people out there who could be using them and enjoying sport.
"The idea is to collect all of that unused sport and fitness gear on September 4 and then redistribute it to those in need. It's about eliminating barriers to participating in sport, whilst encouraging others to do a bit of spring-cleaning and assist in contributing positively to a sector of the community that might not have the luxury of owning a basketball, cricket bat or a swiss ball."
The project was believed to be the first of its kind run in Southland, and is being supported by Southland Stags captain Jamie Mackintosh and Southern Steel vice-captain Wendy Frew.
Frew, who has represented New Zealand in netball and softball, said sport had played a big role in her life and she encouraged people to do what they could to help others have similar opportunities.
"Who knows, it might prove the catalyst for our next Southland sporting legend," she said.
