Southland man Simon Murphy may have made a star appearance on UK game show The Chase, but it will take a while for New Zealand audiences to catch up to him.

Murphy appeared on the British television show last month, where he and his team of three won £16,000 [NZ$28,000].

However, with episodes in New Zealand running well behind the UK, it may be a year or more before the episode is aired here.

Having lived for the past few years in Somerset, working as an aircraft mechanic, Murphy and his family have returned for a holiday in his hometown of Gore.

He said it had been a bit difficult keeping the good news a secret.

"The episode was filmed in June 2016, so I had to keep it under wraps for quite a while.

"Everyone knew that I'd been on the show, but I had only told my wife and a couple of other people that I'd actually won anything."

It was the first time Murphy had been on a game show before, and he said it was a much different experience than watching from home.

"The cardinal sin when you're watching at home is not getting your answer in on time.

"On the couch when you're relaxed it's quite easy, but when you're there you feel the pressure a lot more.

"I got the first question wrong, so I was under pressure from the start."

Up against chaser Paul Sinha, Murphy and the rest of his team rallied together to win.

"We did just enough to win. I don't think Paul had a great day with his answers.

"We'll take it though – a win's a win."

The game show victory came in the middle of a busy 2016 for the Murphy family, in between getting married and buying a house and car.

"The money we won really made a huge difference for us."
