Finalists found in Southland club softball

Demons Softball Club player Chris Telfer was part of the team at the NZ Club Nationals in Christchurch.

With the Southland Major League Softball finalists already sorted, Premiers 1, 2 and 3 took to the diamonds at Surrey Park on Saturday to play their semifinals.

Panthers Wildcats were too strong for Titans in Premier 1, winning 11-1 in five innings over Titans.

Demons took out the other semi in this grade, with a 12-7 win against Port, meaning that the final will be played between Wildcats and Demons.

Wildcats batters were Russell Keen (2) Sam Mitchell, Braeden Heslip, Craig Smith, Simon Cade, Michael Cade (1), Heslip came out on top in the "Runs Batted In" category with four.

Shaye Gentle performed with the bat for Titans, going 3 from 3, followed by Sam Mercer, Paul Henry, Matthew Robinson, Damon Topi (1).

Although Port won the batting dual against Demons by 12 hits to 10, Demons made better use of their base runners by stringing their hits together and taking advantage of some sloppy fielding by Port who made nine fielding errors.

For Demons, Jayden Johnston, Te Kaanu Te Huia, Josh Richardson (2) Brooke Pennicott, Jonty Grey, Kiahn Johnson, Jack Steel (1) made the 10 hits, and for Port, Logan Fraser, Jayson Kennedy (3), Dion Te Tai, Houston Te Tai (2) Jayden Kennedy, Buckley Kirner (1) were in good form.

Premier 2 saw Dodgers PK win against Central Otago Panthers 9-5, setting up to play Panthers Braves in the final.

Dodgers best batters were Rex McCormack, Tamati Wilson (3) Russell Harvey, Cameron Carter (2).

For Central, Mitchell Wheeler, Tyla O'Neill (2) were the best.

Premier 3 semifinals resulted in Port defeating Panthers Cubs 6-3 and Wallacetown won against Dodgers Dynamos 7-5.

Port batters were, Sonny Tuhi (3) Hana Mitchell, Damian Kennedy (2) Reagan Fraser, William Hollands (1)

For Panthers, Ben Symon (2) came out on top.

Wallacetown batters were Steve Harley (3) Carl Stewart, Andrew Stark, Jason ten Hoorn Boer (2).

Ruby Borland-Fraser, Mary-Beth Prosch and Seth Glover took the three hits for Dodgers.

Finals will be played this weekend.

Meanwhile, the Demons Softball Club picked up just one victory at the NZ Club Nationals in Christchurch on their way to 20th place.  

Their only success was a 6-0 win over Stoke, while they narrowly lost 1-0 to Auckland club Howick in their second game of the tournament.
