Invercargill police are asking the public to look out for a blue Ford Courier utility vehicle stolen from a rural property near Balfour in Northern Southland overnight.

Police believe it is being driven by Dale Jason Shillito, a 30-year-old Invercargill man who is wanted on a warrant to arrest in relation to a serious assault which occurred in Invercargill at the weekend.

The ute's registration is ZA1081. It is a year 2000 model.

Police said they wanted to locate Shillito and believed he could be anywhere in the South Island.

People with information can contact their nearest police station or provide information anonymously to the Crimestoppers line 0800 555 111.

Police said Shillito was not believed to be a danger to the public but anyone who saw him should not approach him but call 111 immediately.
