The cause of a fire which gutted part of a luxury rural lodge near Wanaka yesterday will be investigated.
Lake Hawea chief fire officer Doug Brenssell said it was not yet clear what caused the blaze in the timber garage and one of the bedrooms of Maungawera Lodge, on State Highway 6 between Albert Town and Lake Hawea.
Nor was it known how many people were in the lodge when the fire broke out, but everyone got out safely, he said.
At least 20 volunteer firefighters from Lake Hawea and Wanaka were called to the fire at 3.15pm and it took them more than half an hour to extinguish it.
There was a strong smell of gas once the fire was out and water was used to disperse it, to prevent a build-up.
Three fire trucks and two tankers were used to douse the blaze.
