Too few seek spot on boards
Why do you think people don't stand?
Four southern community boards have fallen short of nominees for the October local body election.
Each of the community boards received one less nomination than the number of vacancies, meaning by-elections will be required to fill the vacant spots on the boards after the election.
In the Southland district, both the Edendale-Wyndham and Tuatapere community boards were short on nominees.
Southland District Council deputy electoral officer Bede Carran said if the positions could not be filled at the by-elections the community board members would be able to scout for people they believed would be suitable.
In the Gore district, the Mataura Community Board did not receive enough nominations.
Gore District Council chief executive Steve Parry said it took matters of controversy for people to stand for election.
"When things are going OK, fewer people come forward."
Gore District Council electoral officer Tony Shepherd said the cost of a by-election would depend on how many nominations were received.
If there was more than one nominee, a full election would be triggered, which would cost between $5000 and $7000, Mr Shepherd said.
In the Central Otago district, the Teviot Valley Community Board was one nominee short.
The Bluff Community Pool Trust Board also had fewer nominees than the number of vacancies.
Invercargill City Council electoral officer Graham Low said the Bluff Community Pool trustees would be able to appoint an applicant for any vacancies, so a by-election would not be required.
A similar process was likely to be used to elect members of the Gore and Districts Health Inc Trust, Clutha Health Inc, and Central Otago Health Inc, all of which were short of nominees.
