'The Burt' Bonneville scores big in build-off
MotoSouth owner Greg Baynes was "in it to win it" with his customised Triumph Bonneville, named "The Burt".
The former Burt Munro beach race winner, and his MotoSouth staff, won the $5000 first prize in the custom Bonneville build-off, a competition run by Triumph New Zealand.
Twelve Triumph dealers across the country built a Triumph Bonneville with a "Kiwiana" theme.
Baynes finished the bike at 9.30pm on Saturday and left Invercargill, Wellington-bound, at 7am on Sunday.
On Monday, his bike was announced the winner at the British High Commissioner's residence.
Baynes, who has always been interested in motorbikes and had a passion for riding them, said it had taken his team all of two minutes to decide on a Burt Munro theme, because of the Bonneville and Invercargill links.
He and his team had lowered the handlebars, changed the wheels and seat, removed the rear mudguard and subframe and painted out all the chrome. The bike enthusiasts also used vehicle-wrap with images of Burt Munro on the fuel tank and his racing number on the side panels.
He was "pretty chuffed" with the win, he said.
"The whole idea was to be in it to win it and we were pretty confident."
The one-off bike would be sold, he said.
