Otago-Southland Chinese Association Southland branch chairman Jim Wong, left, and New Zealand Malayan Veterans Association committee member Colin Rooney lay a wreath at the Cenotaph in Invercargill at the weekend to celebrate 56 years of Malaysia's independence.
Event organiser Linda Duncan said about 50 people attended, which was on par with last year.
The celebration was attended by Malaysians living in Invercargill and New Zealand veterans who fought in the Malaya-Indonesia conflict, and their families.
This was the third year the Invercargill celebration had been held, she said.
New Zealanders fought on the side of Malays during the Malaya-Indonesia conflict from 1962-66, which resulted from Indonesian opposition to the formation of Malaysia.
