Otago Police believe missing Central Otago man Simon Garrick has died or been killed.

Detective sergeant Derek Shaw, of Alexandra police, said they were appealing to the public for help in an effort to find out what happened to Garrick, a petty criminal and drug user.

He said police had now launched a homicide investigation after a 100 day-long search for Garrick turned up nothing.

Garrick has been missing last October when a warrant for arrest was issued against him for failing  to appear in court.
