A Clinton man suffered serious burns to one of his hands after a fire in his multi-burner got out-of-control last night.

Clinton Fire Brigade chief fire officer Bill Harris said the man, in his early 20s, suffered serious burns to one of his hands after trying to put out the fire, which spread from the multi-burner at his Bruce St home in Kakapuaka about 7.40pm.

The fire spread throughout the room, damaging the floor and causing smoke damage, he said.

It appeared the man burnt his hand trying to put the fire out which was ''a bit silly'', Mr Harris said. The fire was out when the fire brigade arrived.

He was ''pretty lucky'' the fire caused no further damage or injuries, he said.

Another man, also in his 20s, was at the house at the time of the fire.

A Southern Ambulance communications team manager said the patient was transported to Clutha Health First hospital after a call from the fire service.

The status of the patient was unknown, she said.
