A major landslide has dumped material over 2ha, stacked 3m high, on the Hollyford Rd, closing access to Gunn's Camp.
Milford Rd has also been blocked by avalanches, affecting a 12km stretch of road.
NZ Transport Agency area manager Peter Robinson said the Milford Rd had been closed since 8.45am yesterday because of a risk of avalanches.
Clean-up had begun and it was hoped access would be gained as soon as possible, Mr Robinson said.
An aerial inspected was performed as part of a safety assessment today.
There were reports of avalanches yesterday afternoon and more activity overnight, he said.
The landslide hit the Hollyford Rd yesterday, he said.
People wanting to travel to these areas should check the agency's website for updates.
