Southland's craft show with a difference
Beer lovers will be in for a treat next year at Southland's first craft beer and food day.
Six months ago Liquorland South City Invercargill manager Jim Mortimer started thinking about organising an event for Southland similar to Beervana, which is held in Wellington.
The first Invercargill South City Liquorland Craft Beer and Food Experience will be held in March next year, promising tastes of New Zealand's best boutique beers and delicious foods.
About eight craft beer manufacturers will be offering their brews, one of which is Australian, Mr Mortimer said.
"A craft beer is lovingly made by an independent brewer, not the big companies . . . the New Zealand market is heading more and more towards craft beers."
"People are willing to pay more for a better beer," he said.
He noted more customers asking which beer would go with their evening meals, something Mr Mortimer thought could be attributed to the popularity of cooking television shows.
Food at the event will be paired with the beers on offer.
"It's not going to be the old sausage sizzle," Mr Mortimer said.
"There will be Indian food to match with pilsners, chocolate to match with stouts, and Blue River cheese will be matched up with different beers as well."
Mr Mortimer said there had been a lot of interest in the event already.
"We haven't had anything like this down here before. I'm really looking forward to it."
Between 300 and 400 tickets will be available from January, but Mr Mortimer encourages those interested to register online from next week to make sure they do not miss out.
Tickets are $25, which includes a free glass.
Instead of cash exchanging hands, punters will buy $2 tokens, which can be exchanged for food and drinks, Mr Mortimer said.
One token would get you a 75ml taste of your chosen beer, while two tokens could be exchanged for a 250ml glass full.
Invercargill South City Liquorland Craft Beer and Food Experience will be at the squash club on Onslow St on March 22.
You can register for your ticket from next week at www.liquorlandsouthcity.co.nz
